La Littighedda Country Residence originated from the ancient Gallurese stazzo, a particularly fascinating historical and cultural reality of Sardinia, specifically from the Gallura region
What is the Gallurese stazzo and what was its purpose?
In the past, the Stazzo encompassed various activities such as the area’s first school, a tobacco shop, a grocery store, and a public telephone, and it produced primary goods like milk, wine, and flour.
Gallurese stazzo It was a meeting place and a point of reference for the local inhabitants, who would gather there to discuss important matters and daily issues due to the lack of institutional structures to regulate social life at that time, or simply for the pleasure of being together.
The stazzo’s economy was primarily based on pastoralism, but it also included the cultivation of cereals, viticulture, and horticulture. The stazzi were self-sufficient, producing almost everything necessary for the survival of the family and the rural community. The milk produced was turned into cheeses, including the famous Sardinian pecorino, while wool and leather were used to make clothing and other daily tools.
Over time, the structure and function of the stazzi underwent significant transformations. The evolution of transport means and infrastructure made these settlements less isolated, facilitating commercial and cultural exchanges with the nearest urban centers. Some stazzi were abandoned as families migrated to cities in search of better job opportunities. However, in recent years, there has been a revaluation of the stazzi, with the renewal of existing structures and the promotion of rural and sustainable tourism, as has happened with La Littighedda
