Historical Sites of Santa Teresa di Gallura
Founded in 1808 during the reign of Victor Emmanuel I of Savoy, Santa Teresa di Gallura has historical roots that stretch back into the mists of time.
Before its modern foundation, the area was known as Longone and had seen the presence of Romans and Byzantines, as evidenced by archaeological findings in the area, including the ruins of Lu Brandali.
This site, just a short distance from the town center, includes a nuraghe, giant’s tombs, and the remains of a prehistoric village, offering a unique glimpse into the life of ancient Sardinian inhabitants. Another significant site in the area is undoubtedly the Longonsardo Tower, strategically located on a promontory offering breathtaking views of the sea.
Built in the 16th century by the Genoese as a defense against Barbary pirate raids, today it offers spectacular views of the Mediterranean and the Strait of Bonifacio. During the summer, the tower often hosts art exhibitions and cultural events, attracting both history buffs and art lovers.
Beaches and the Sea
Certainly, the beaches of Santa Teresa are a highlight of the region, famous for their beauty and crystal-clear waters. Rena Bianca Beach is the jewel of Santa Teresa. A Blue Flag winner for many consecutive years, this beach stretches for nearly a kilometer with fine sand and shallow waters, ideal for families with children.
The area is equipped with sunbed and umbrella rental services and is surrounded by cafés and ice cream shops where you can enjoy local treats while admiring the view. It is located about 15 minutes by car from the residence, on a route through typical Sardinian countryside.
Just a few minutes by car from Santa Teresa and about half an hour from La Littighedda, you will find Capo Testa, famous for its natural granite sculptures, formed over millennia of erosion. The trail leading to the lighthouse is a must-visit for nature lovers, offering breathtaking panoramas and close encounters with local flora and fauna, including cistus, myrtle, and various species of wild orchids.
The beaches of Cala Spinosa and Valle della Luna, near Capo Testa, are little corners of paradise, ideal for those seeking tranquility and natural beauty away from the crowds.
Another place of significant interest is the marina, which not only serves as a starting point for excursions to Corsica and the La Maddalena Archipelago but also offers beautiful sunset walks along the marina, surrounded by cafés and restaurants overlooking the sea.
For dreamy beaches, however, you only need to venture a few minutes from our Country Residence. The coast offers wonderful beaches like that of Rena Majore, famous because the movie “The Little Mermaid” was filmed here.
Delights and flavors of gallurese cuisine
The cuisine of Santa Teresa di Gallura reflects the richness of the sea and the Sardinian land. You cannot leave the area without trying dishes made with local lobster, the famous “bottarga,” and traditional “carasau” bread.
The area’s restaurants offer a wide selection of dishes that combine tradition and innovation. An absolute must-try is Gallurese-style lobster, while for a more rustic culinary experience, you can try “Suppa Cuata” a typical Gallurese soup, a hearty dish made with stale bread, broth, and pecorino, often enriched with local aromatic herbs.
Things to do in Santa Teresa di Gallura
Besides natural beauties and beaches, Santa Teresa offers a variety of activities. For sea lovers, there are opportunities for diving, snorkeling, and sailing.
You can go windsurfing at Porto Pollo or, if you prefer to stay on land, try horseback riding along the coast or hiking on trails along the sea offering spectacular views. The area is also an ideal starting point for excursions to the islands of the La Maddalena Archipelago, a must for anyone visiting Sardinia.
Santa Teresa di Gallura also organizes cultural events and festivals throughout the year, attracting visitors from all over the island and beyond.
In July, there is the Gallura Buskers, a fun international festival of street artists and contemporary circus.
Santa Teresa di Gallura offers much more than paradisiacal beaches. Its rich history, ancient culture, and numerous available activities make it the perfect place for an unforgettable vacation in Sardinia.
